How annoying that they didn't even know what they were talking about!

Look on the bright side- the Ameraucanas I've been around have been friendlier than any RIR's I've known and they lay green eggs! Mine lay really well.

A lot depends on which hatchery the chicks came from. The ones I got from Ideal hatchery this spring are pretty true to form for Ameraucanas.

Ah, well, good for you Buster, I'm interested to hear that.
Which color did you get? (Black, Blue, Silver, Brown/Red, Buff, Wheaten, White, Blue Wheaten?)

Thanks for the link Susan. Looking at my birds compared to those, the colors are off but three are similar to the brown/red and one is similar to the buffs. They all have pea combs, green legs and beards. I know they aren't high quality birds but they work for what I got them for- green eggs that my sons LOVE. I plan on someday having better stock but this works for me for now. It was what I was able to order from the hatchery before I ever got my incubator.

I know that is totally aggrivating to buy one thing and end up with another . BUT consulation is $2.00 each is NOT a bad price for them . I paid $2.50 each for my 30 RIR's , Austrolorps and barred rocks . Mine were a week old

They were bought in April 2008 . PIC of them when I got them .

I'll say it again and again and again. There's nothing "better" about true/pure Ameraucanas except that that's what they ARE. I have no interest or intention of demeaning the birds that you have. My first flock of chickens were EE's; I thought they were Ameraucanas; I loved them dearly. My new flock has both EE's and Ameraucanas, and I love them dearly too. I am, however, interested in knowing the difference, and I suspect that lots of us feel the same way. It's just a matter of knowing more about a subject that interests me. I am NOT an Ameraucana snob. I just want to spread/share the information that I am gleaning with others who just might be as interested as I am.

There are plenty of people here whose interest is more purposeful than mine. People who are raising true/pure Ameraucanas have invested a lot into their pursuit. Just think about keeping a separate pen for every different color....Wow....what a lot of time and money. Those folks are invested in the difference, and rightly so. I'm only invested as a matter of interest.

And so....off the ole soapbox and back to reading about chickens.

You go, Buster.....those eggs are the best !!!!
