Mo went back to the vet for wound cleaning. The open place on his shoulder is deep and now infected. Fever is 105+. There were 4 vets and students checking him out. He wasn't given much of a chance of recovering. Well today went it was time to feed him he was surprisingly anti social. Haha. Did someone mention giving him Medicine Gatorade? He got a dressing on his wound and went outside for 15 minutes. Seein0g the other chickens made him crow.

Has the vet give him any antibiotics to fight the infection? the Gatorade meds are just for electrolytes to perk him up. 105 degrees is normal for a chicken temp. The crow is a good sign, a really sick bird wont.

He has had 2 sets of them. Today he was eating bird seed and crumbles. Drinking water and eating some of a peach. He is getting so strong that my husband has to hold him so I can clean his wound. He can probably go in the coop with the hens and hens that have chicks if I find a dressing that will stay on

He has had 2 sets of them. Today he was eating bird seed and crumbles. Drinking water and eating some of a peach. He is getting so strong that my husband has to hold him so I can clean his wound. He can probably go in the coop with the hens and hens that have chicks if I find a dressing that will stay on

The wound is healing well. The antibiotic that gets put on it is yellow so some infection may remain but peroxide doesn't bubble alot. The wound is on the nob of his shoulder, where the wing attaches. You can see some bone when the scab is off. The suture is at the top toward his spine.

Did the vet give you antibiotics for him to take since the bone is exposed?

I would try using Chlorhexidine when cleaning the wound instead of Peroxide, see if that makes a difference.

I hope he recovers quickly.

How did Mo get the injury? Chickens are amazingly resilient! I once had a rooster attacked by a fox. He had surgery to stitch up his whole belly area. It took a long time healing, but he pulled through. He lost most of the use of one leg and his breastbone never covered with feathers, but he eventually went back into the coop with his girls and lived for another year and a half.

It took a long time healing, but he pulled through. He lost most of the use of one leg and his breastbone never covered with feathers, but he eventually went back into the coop with his girls and lived for another year and a half.

Fox attack . His ribcage and neck were purple with bruising. And the tear on his shoulder. He is almost back to being himself. He has recovered enough that handling him is a battle. He's in a small pen in the chicken lot. That chicken coop set up has Mo, seven cochin chicks, 2 single hens and a pair of Bantams with 5 chicks. It has become my little nursery.
