Big question, why did all of you new chicken owners get chickens?

My riding buddy gave me four pullets in July 2010. Built a small coop and fell in love! Did a little research and discovered that there are heritage breeds going extinct. Bought 5 buckeyes, built a bigger coop and plan to breed in the spring!

Allways thought it would be cool to have chickens! My husband and I have grown out a steer and hogs and my kids at one time heard me say "well we've done a cow and pigs how about chickens!" So last easter they got me chickens at tractor supply, and guess what? I am lovin every minute of them! I just love to listen to them and watch them out in the yard~didn't know what I was missing!

My wife is allergic to the antibiotics they put in the feed for store baught processed chicken and eggs. Now that we raise our own, she has no problems. Plus it really erks the neighbors when I use the chicken plucker.

I just all of a sudden really wanted chickens this past spring. So I got some. I guess it was my genetic heritage trying to get me back to my roots. My grandma grew up on a farm. She's told me about it a few times, but never really said too much. So being a "farmer" is in my genes, so here goes! First chick came May 21st, 2010. Now he's a pain in the butt roo that thinks he's all big and bad until we go in the pen with him and the girls. lol

I finally talked my husband into it after several years. He figured if he went along and built the coop, he could control the numbers (silly man). I wanted the fresh eggs and also to help with educational with the kids.

Hi everyone, my name is Trapper, well they call me Trapper

I don't have my chick's or my coop yet but come spring time, I will have both. I am a retired veteran and I have alot of land and time on my hands. I love the land and what it gives me. This year I started with a garden that is 60 x 30'. It may not sound like much but if you saw from where I started from, you would understand. The 78 acres of land that I have is a wooded and I have to do the clearing first. Then I had to dig up the stump, make the land level, dig up 60 x 30 x 2' to add good dirt cause what I had was to rocky and not rich enough for a garden. I had to add composte to enrich the dirt to make it right for next year's crop.

Enough about gardening, I want to talk about chickens. I am obsessed with them and for a good reason. They are fun loving and easy to raise birds that give back for your hard work. Eggs mmmm so delicious, fertilizer for my composte pile and their meat so tender and juicy.

I'm not the type to get attached to them cause I know their fate but I might get close to some roosters. I am planning to have, for my first batch, 25 buff chanteclers and 25 Orpingtons, not sure what kind yet. I will not hatch any till the next year

due to the cold weather here in Quebec, Canada.

My coop will be a pretty big and will have space to make it bigger. (I may want to get turkeys some day) I've started planning for it and changed my mind like 1000 times. Seen a few different models and got alot of idea on this site and the web but no hurry, I have 5 to 6 months befor I can build it.

Oh yeah before I go, I really wanted to thanks everyone for their knowledge that they have been sharing. I have learned alot in the past week or so. I also want to thank the one that started this site. Its was a great idea and you are doing a great job.

I thought about it for years and finally said I am doing it. I have not looked back since. We do it for the fun, love and eggs. My family, including the hubs, adore them. They are my therapy after a rough day. I have six right now, but going today to adopt a BCM hen, so I am done! LOL!

HE STARTED IT!

My boyfriend went in with the neighbor on a chick order this spring. I was supportive but not overly enthusiastic. We already had a herd of critters to manage. We being mostly me!

Well, once they moved out of my laundry room to the coop I just fell in love with the antics of the whole flock. I then found this forum and I am always telling the BF neat things I have learned! I keep teasing him and telling him he can order his own chickens next spring but I think he has caught on and knows they would be added to my flock in no time! They are so friendly and line up every time I open the front door...THE TREAT LADY IS COMING!!!
