Hi Everyone who may stumble upon my entry!
My name is Connie and I am BRAND SPANKING NEW to chickens! I love animals and was raised with a veritable zoo. I first read an article a few years back about how backyard chickens are making a come back and I thought, "hmmm sounds easy enough, I'd like to try that someday." No time better than the present! I am a mother of two lovely girls (8yrs and 7 months), have a husband, two cats, a cottage garden with flowers, herbs, veggies and fruit, and I work part-time as a dental hygienist (hence my screen name- I love puns and word play). In addition to gardening and chickens I also enjoy many other hobbies: cooking, baking, sewing, crafting, photography, hiking, camping, pottery, singing, shopping, and playing make-believe and reading aloud with my kids.
I found BYC by google searching "backyard chickens" because I have only a backyard, not a ranch or farm, and was soooo excited to discover this website! I have been telling everyone I know, and while I get some laughs, everyone is excited about getting fresh eggs.
I am planning to have 3-4 chickens and hope to have some combination of the following breeds:
Orpington
Plymouth Rock
Austrolorp
Americana/ Easter Egger (yay blue or green eggs!!!)
Brahma.
I need quiet and friendly birds for my family and close neighbors. Doing well in small spaces is important. I plan to build a coop and run, but plan to let my ladies out while I work in yard 3-4 days a week at least.
Any suggestions???? Does anyone see any huge flaws in my plan?

Hello and welcome from Ohio...so glad you joined us. Your plans sound great to me, sounds like my setup :)

Thank you everyone! I feel very welcome. I am super excited- I ordered my babies

last night: 2 buff orpingtons, 2 partridge rocks, 1 barred rock, and 1 rare marans (hatcheries choice for shipping that week- hoping for a black copper marans but the surprise is fun) . They are set to arrive week of May 21!!!!!!
I know, six chickens is more than three or four! I had to order 6, and I know not all make it to adulthood every time..... I don't really want 6 chickens, but we'll see.
