Big Spurs!

We've a rooster, Oliver, a big handsome Cuckoo Marans, whose spurs have gotten out of control long. He's begun to walk a wee bit funny and I reckon this may be the cause. The spurs knock into the opposing leg.

Can the spurs be trimmed or only removed? Any recommendations how? Thanks

We used a dremel with our game cock who had 4 1/2 inch long spurs. We trimmed between a half inch and an inch the first time. Mainly to make sure we didn't get the 'quick'. About 2 weeks later, we trimmed 2 inches off. Just make sure you don't go too short, just like with any other animal. If it bleeds, ya went too short. Cornstarch will slow the flow. Just pack it in.

The concensus sounds like the spurs have to go. I don't think the dog nail clip will work - maybe the llama toe nail clipper. These spurs are big. Oh well, he was supposed to help guard the hens and I thought he'd need them.

I read about a way of rocking them off. Have any of you tried that?
