Big UPDATE: Parakeet eggs!!!!!!!

Thanks! That makes me feel better...I don't get why people are so precise and say that you MUST feed them every 2 hours or they will die(that's what I read anyway). Same thing with incubating eggs. It's OK if temp. and/or hum. isn't perfect, just has to be ideal enough for the chicks to develop.

I sent you a PM with my mom's work address. Since you are way over in CA, my mom said it would take 2-3 days(more or less) until it gets here. Perfect timing!

I will let you know when it arrives.

After candling, I threw 1 egg out that wasn't developing. The chick started to develop but died. Now we have 2 eggs left. 1 is still alive and healthy; I can see the embryo moving around inside. The other also has veins and everything, but not much movement. Looks like it's almost ready to hatch! So excited to see my new babies this week!!!!!

Oh and I just got the funniest idea; I want to teach them how to talk, so does anyone have any requests? I want them to say: "Backyardchickens.com is awesome!"

And maybe even: "Thanks onthespot!"

I was just talking to my older sister and her boyfriend and telling them how I will have to wake up every 2-3 hours for the first 4 weeks, even at night.

They were like, "You're gonna kill yourself!"

LOL I don't think it will take away much of my sleep; it will probably take 10 minutes or so to feed them, then back to bed and then wake up 2-3 hours later.

You'll be fine. Mothers of human babies do it all the time. Hope you have tons of fun with your parakeet adventure.

Before I knew parakeets could talk... years ago.. I had a parakeet named Pete. Petey was allowed to fly around the house, and was constantly pulling crazy stunts. He'd wait for the dog to take a nap, land 10 feet away, prance up and bite her on the nose, then fly away. Another favorite of his was to land on the chain leading to the stained glass lamp, shimmy down the chain til he was just over the dogs nose and swing back and forth upside down like a bat. When the dog would snap at him he'd fly to the top, shimmy down again, and repeat.

Sometimes he'd fly over to my shoulder for me to protect him, after pulling a stunt, and I'd just shake my head and mutter "Crazy bird". One day, old Petey pulled a stunt, flew over to my shoulder and proudly announced, "Crazy Bird!" That's all he ever learned to say, but I didn't even have to try to teach him, he picked that up all on his own.

Parakeets make a great pet, you're going to do a lot of work, but it'll really pay off when you have to keets who think you are mamma for the rest of their lives.

If that's the case then my 3 human babies would have killed me years ago. LOL!

We used to raise baby birds for the Humane Society and they provided us with a vitamin oil to give the babies once a day, but their main food staple was plain baby pablum. We used Heinz brand mixed grain cereal and all the different babies did great.
