Big yellow jacket nest in wall of chicken coop

No affect on the chickens at all.

This spray has a very small odor level, it kinda smells a little like motor oil. Telco-Rainbow wasp and hornet spray is used by the utility companies and in my opinion is the best bee/wasp spray you can get, but it is expensive.
Cool!

yellow jackets dont just nest in the ground they'll make nests out of mud and nest in hollow things. I found a huge yellow jackets nest in our empty boat compartment as long as a full grown house cat.
Yes, they can but they do NOT build paper nests like that. That is not a yellow jacket.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about yellow jacket and hornet nests here, not that it means much to the OP. It is entirely possible that the OP's nest was that of a yellow jacket. Yellow jackets and Hornets comprise the sub-family Vespinae. All members of Vespinae build "paper" nests made principally from masticated bits of woody plant material. The yellow jackets comprise just two genera, the Vespula, which typically build their nests within cavities or voids (often underground) and the Dolichovespula, which are typically aerial nesters and build their paper nests further above the ground, like hornets. The Dolichovespula are widepread and common in the US. The one complicating exception is the common name for the Bald Faced Hornet (Dolichovespula maculata), which is white and black and not called a yellow jacket, even though it is a member of the Dolichovespula.
