Hi,

We have 2 separate flocks basically, the favourite one is made up of mainly silkie sizes that my daughter hatched at school and we have since had 4 more hatched at home. This flock has 2 roosters who are brother and are frizzles and co exist very well. The older birds in this flock go back 2 years and there are 3 "normal" bigger chickens in there are well

The second flock is (who where originally in with the above flock but we separated them due to 7 out of 11 being roosters and them getting too rough). The 4 hens in this flock I have just separated out again to try to put both back together. They seem to be ok for now.
My questions is when it comes to roosters can you have big road island red etc in with the little guys or are they just too rough?

We are going away and are trying to make it safer and nicer for them all to stay locked away for a few days (the little flock where in a tiny night cage due to foxes and it is way to small to leave them locked in for a few days.

I think it depends on the roosters personality. If it's big rough and aggressive, then it is best kept away from small hens. Even if the rooster is the same size as the hen, they can hurt them if they're too firey and aggressive. But sometimes even with big roosters they can be sweet and docile. The other thing is, (and this one is pretty obvious) don't get one big enough to, well.... Crush them. For instants... Don't put a Brahma or an Orpington rooster with a bantam. This was all pretty obvious information, but I hope it helped anyway.
