I am having too many deaths in shell right before, and possibly at the begining of lock down. What should I be looking for as the cause?

Unfortunately there are a number of causes for this. I will list them for you and you can go through them and see which may or may not apply:

- Incorrect incubator temperature or humidity during incubation/lockdown.
- Inadequate turning of the eggs, especially during the first 15 days of incubation.
- Contamination, from incubator (not cleaned, sterilised between hatches), or hands when handling the eggs, during turning etc.
- Nutritional deficiencies in the breeder flock, resulting in deficiencies in the egg.
- Embryo failing to move into proper hatching position.
- Embryological development problems.
- Hereditary, lethal genes or chromosome abnormalities.
- Poor eggshell quality.
- Disease in breeder flock.
- Inadequate ventilation during incubation/lockdown.
- Eggs stored too long prior to incubation.

Hope this helps!

So what is the biggest reason they pip on the wrong end. I am having quite a few do that too.
Would locking down too late do that?

The biggest cause of that specific malposition is setting the eggs incorrectly, with the pointy end of the egg higher than the fat end (when lying down) or upside down with the pointy end up. Other than that it may be inadequate egg turning and/or inadequate turning angle (needs to be minimum 45* if turned/tilted) and incorrect humidity resulting in incorrect air cell development. And in some cases (±1% only) it is because the egg was stored too long before setting it, 18 days or longer. The chick embryo positions itself for hatching at around 14 days into incubation. So it's not due to locking down late.

What was your incubator settings, humidity, temperature and how often did you turn them etc?

Turned 3 x's a day. Temp 37.5 C down to 37.0 C at lock down.
and humidity 45% till lock then 65%.

The ones that have hatched don't show any signes of shrink wrapping.
I have only opened a few unhatched ones and I don't see it there either.
