Morayshire Scotland
Hi
I'm in the planning stages of making a home for chickens. I live in a small village in Morayshire in North Scotland.
I have a 7ft x3ft pent roofed bike shed that I am planning on adapting to use as my coop.
I am planning on replacing the roof and making it a reverse apex so that I can put ventilation in the eaves above the roosting bars. I also plan on adding 2 opening windows and 4 built on nest boxes 2 each side. The shed will be raised up to a height that's easy for me to clean and I will most likely keep the double door aspect for ease of cleaning.
This will all be contained in a 6ft x20ft predator proof run with some roof coverage added to it for shade etc.
I am planning on having 6 chickens 3 standard and 3 bantams.
In the run I plan on using sand as a base and adding plenty of activities/stimulation for them.
I will be adding poopshelfs under roosting bar to aid cleaning.
When I am home which is most days as medically retired, I plan on letting the chickens out for a few hours to forage. I have dogs so it will be timed so dogs are inside whilst chickens are outside foraging.

Is the coop and run going to be enough space for the amount of chickens I want?

Do I have any wriggle room for increasing my flock if I chose to next year?

I don't really have any wriggle room for expanding the run but could expand coop as they would have access underneath it anyway.
No pics at moment as still in planning stage.
Any suggestions appreciated.

I'd say, no.
Just enough space for the 6 you already plan,
and integration works best with lots of space.
Looking forward to seeing pics of shed.
Thank you for your reply.
Today my dad and I remeasured and redesigned our coop plans.
So coop is now 7ftx5ft apex and run will be
21x6ft.

So would this allow for me to have 4 standard chickens and 4 bantams.

It's so confusing looking online as everyone has different opinions and I'm not really sure who to pay attention too, eg I had planned on buying a coop and run premade that said was suitable for 12 to 15 birds but its measures smaller than what I'm making.

I want to get it right for them before I buy my girls.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.

Most premade coops use a very small sqft per bird area.

Yes it is.
1-2 sqft per bird is common for factory raised birds
The most common around BYC is 4sqft per bird,
but many here have found that is bare minimum.
More space in coop and run will make for healthier and happier chickens....and keepers.
