I recently had a 6 or 7 day old Coturnix fly out of the 21 inch tall brooder, and waddle down the hall to the kitchen. What the hell? So apparently California quail chicks can fly at less than 2 weeks old. Well, they can fall with style and jump up almost 2 feet. At least they're getting used to me grabbing them so only one escape so far. At this rate, they'll be just as good at flying as my coturnix within 2 weeks.
Mine wouldn't have been able to do that till 2-3 weeks old. Maybe its because mine were jumbos?I recently had a 6 or 7 day old Coturnix fly out of the 21 inch tall brooder, and waddle down the hall to the kitchen.
These are 2 weeks and 3 days old, they could cross the yard with ease if I let them escape.Mine wouldn't have been able to do that till 2-3 weeks old. Maybe its because mine were jumbos?
California quail develop more slowly than Coturnix. They’ll start off at similar growth rates, but if you keep them side by side, you’ll see the calis get further and further behind.Mine still have down almost everywhere except their wings, I'm also raising them under a red heat lamp in a room with no windows. I'll take some pictures once I'm done with lunch.
Edit: forgot I had one on my phone from yesterday.
