"Chickens for Dummies" was probably written with me in mind, but since I do not own it, I have to as you a real winner of a question.
When a rooster mates with a chicken, does it impregnant the egg that is developing inside her that day, or is it good for more that one day/egg?

Hens actually hold a load of spermin thier reproductive track for several weeks after a mating so one visit from the roo can mean many fertile eggs. It's a common thing with birds.

At the same time do expect one mating to lead to fertile eggs. Roos aren't always a good shot so you need to leave him with the hens for a good week if you expect to hatch eggs.
