Birds big and small

Welcome to BYC. One of our former members used to have Emus and they would try to run down the chickens. I don't think it's a good idea to chance it. Also they tend to see dogs as coyotes or wolves(whatever is going on in their minds) and will trample them if given the opportunity.

If emus have been highly socialized as youngsters- they may be stable around humans. They are large animals & can cause serious harm to their keepers. They like water and are good swimmers. It's most important for them not to injure their legs. If the legs go, so does the emu.

They do best with large, high fenced secure areas where they can roam. Since they can do a lot of reckless racing around it's best not to have a lot of trees in their enclosure. BYC has an emu forum and member pyxis is very knowledgeable about them. With a breeding pair, once the female lays eggs, it is the male that hatches them.
Thank you for the reply! The emus are highly socialized and regularly interact with humans, but yes there are always concerns and precautions taken. They have a pond where they like to walk through and we regularly give them showers whenever it’s warm! They also have a good racing track where they can spread their legs and go!
