Birds go nuts over store bought mash

howdy all.
I normally mix my own feed as it's cheaper, and I know what's in it. How ever I had to go for emergency back surgery so I told my dad to just pick up layer ration. He told me he's never seen the birds go that crazy over feed. I am wondering what is wrong with my feed I mix? It's balanced nutritionally but not ground up like the layer feed

To mix ones own feed and have it truly balanced you basically need to be a chemist and specialist in poultry nutrition. Getting some of the nutrients required would be difficult and very costly.

I would not continue to make my own. There is no way the regular person can truly make a balanced feed.

Something important is missing or they would not have gone bonkers for the new feed.

Thanks for your opinion. I had foun one local store just grinds up the corn wheat and barly while adding oyster shell snd grit to make it "complete" so they can charge tax on overpriced feed

That store certainly isn't making a complete feed. There are a lot of nutrients missing if that is all they are putting in it.
