Birds kicking and scratching - very bothered - please help!

Red mites hide in the coop crevices and corners and only come out at night. Foot stamping is one of the signs of red mites. Check the roosts with a flashlight at night for them. No see ums, mosquitoes, buffalo gnats all harass poultry while they are on the roost. I think that your coop cleaning and spraying may help alleviate the problem. Good luck.

Listen to sourland. Red a.k.a. Roost mites can be idenifed by vigorously wiping the roost poles in the middle of the night with a clean white paper towel. Red stains on the paper towel is the blood of your chickens that has been sucked from their bodies. Up to 750,000 Red or Roost mites may attack a single hen each and every night. At this rate of blood loss a chicken can be dead from anemia in as little as 7 days.

Hi SurferchikinSB,

would you please share tips and hints with me as to how to use the Elector PSP, like dilution ratio you use, and how much to put on the birds and how, if you have time?

do you spray it on? until they are soaked to the skin or just a bit on each bird? We have a large flock and they do not like to be caught and handled, but I will do it to help them, if needed.

do you turn the bird upside down to reach the bottom?

any tips for what works to kill the pests on the birds and not be excessive with the spay much appreciated!

I use 1TBSP. in a 1+ 1/4 gallons water or a little less than a TBSP in 1 gallon water in a plastic gallon jug, shake it up and put in hand sprayer. I sprayed all surfaces and spray the chicken by wrapping in a hand towel to spray vent area and lift each wing and spray underneath. The bird is on it's back in my lap, since I am doing this alone and do not have a helper. Look on You Tube and the Chicken Chick. One spray is suppose to last 30 days.

Never heard of this stuff before - this forum is great.

Hope it works for you! I did not see your alert but hopefully you got my mix ratio. It is on the package, but my area is small and I only have 8 chickens, so I had to downscale the formula because I am not sure how long it keeps once it is mixed, sometimes with bacterial formulas, they die or go bad after a certain time. The stuff is expensive! The bottle is small but mixes into an amount that will treat thousands of square feet, so I did not want to waste it.
