Birdy bed time - how we get ours to go to bed

If I'm outside, they like to stay outside with me.

So, then they get "The Song".

I start clapping, and sing "every chickie everywhere let's go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep"...and they will start going into the coop.

What weirdos. LOL

Humm...well, someone forgot to tell Randy the Roo to set his clock back

One day I opened the door...but the hens didn't come out, like they normally do so, he puffed up and went into the coop. Chased each of them out...one by one. That's the only time I've seen him do this...it was too funny!

At night...he waits and does the little hat dance around them until they are all in. On another occasion, Randy was left out of the run and I walked into the coop to find them all sitting on the floor of the coop. Where was Randy? He was in the adjacent room on a ladder rung...perched. Normally he is in the coop with them!

I guess I didn't realize he had anything to do with them perching UP on the roosts. It looked like they were a bunch of squatters on the floor. Once I put him in there and put them up on the roosts they cuddled right up to him.

Is this normal or are my chickens WAY codependent? Sheesh!

I have a white leghorn that is always first to go into the pen, followed by the brown leghorn then they go to the house. The older chickens then go to the perches and the younger chickens are last to enter. I have forgotten to lock the pen at night, which I think they prefer since they can get an early start on the following day. I have my dogs there encase of any predators they seem to like to mark the territory just to let the predators know that there are dogs around it seem to have worked so far.

The chickens like to be sung to . . . hope it's not because I sound like one!

I sing all kinds of things to them from cowboy songs to French nursery songs to Broadway classics. The one that brings them all running for the coop is "I Sing the Mighty Power of God." They've adopted it as their bedtime song; they pile up to the coop, get in line, and hop in.

They also give me a talking to if I skip verses!

well all i do is when it starts gettin dark, which they are already waiting for me to close the pen, is go to the hen house, lift up the top, get the wood that closes the door stick a piece of 2x4 on it then close the top and add my cement blocks so they are already in there when i go to close it, and they are sleeping already. when it gets cold they go in their house, they hate the rain and the cold.
