I have a duck that hatched in June of 2021. She came out with rolled feet and a deformed bill. Her top bill was SLIGHTLY shorter than her bottom bill when she hatched. But it got worse as she grew and now her top bill is slightly less than half the length of her bottom bill.

She is able to eat from deep dishes and all of the ducks drink from deep pools, so she is fine there too.

But what I didn’t even think of, until this morning ( it was pretty cold out) when I saw her fluffed up off on her own, was the fact that without being able to properly grab her feathers, she can’t properly preen.

Short of bringing her in out of the elements until the weather breaks, I don’t know what to do for her. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This thread has suggestions on how to help her preen. You'll also find a link to a thread about special needs ducks in it. 🙂

How's her growth compared to her hatchmates? It seems that more than a few BYC folks have encountered this kind of bill problem - this thread may also be of interest, if you haven't already seen it.

Best wishes for your girl!

You will need to stimulate the gland to help prevent blockages along with giving her a weekly indoor bath and fully drying her before putting her outside. If her feathers are in critical condition you might need to use a pea size amount of dawn for the first indoor bath and then continue with plain water for any following baths.

I will happily read the links you have provided. Thank you so much! As for Shirley’s growth, she is average size for a standard size duck. She is also just as active( even though her feet turn in ever so slightly). She is just a joy. She is adorable. I will try to attach a pic.
