Our girls are really great about putting themselves to bed at night. The other night the door to the coup blew shut on them and when I went out to put them away I found 7 of the 8 sitting patiently on the ramp waiting to go inside for the night. They are so adorable that way. Well last night we had a storm blow through and most of them sought refuge in the coup. But as soon as the storm passed they came back out and did their chicken things in the wet grass. Once it had gotten late enough for them they made their way into the coup and up onto their roosting boards. There was their typical "head from below" ruckus as I peered in through the side access door to make sure that everyone was accounted for and settling in for the night. That was when it hit me. Not an brilliant idea or profound understanding of the universe but that my knee had leaned forward into the electric fence.
It wasn't as bad as I would have though and I was well grounded by wet feet on wet ground next to the ground rod. But suffice to say a shock to the knee passing through the foot probably isn't nearly as surprising as a shock to a little raccoon paw or fox face. It was bad enough though that my knee was quickly retracted from the wire. And it is something that I will be sure to avoid in the future too.
