Generally, I will agree with you. But there are situations where there will be fluid involved, too. It won't be pus as we generally think of it, but things like that can, occasionally, have built up fluids as well as the hardened pus that they usually make. I saw it once in a joint that had gotten a thorn stuck in it (a shame that chickens can't talk, because they sometimes get into situations so ridiculous that you'd LOVE to hear the excuse for them ...) It was caught very early, and there was only fluid and a teensy bit of the cheesy stuff their white cells create in an infection. Maybe it was because of the toxins in the thorn (it was a locust tree thorn, notorious for being quite painful and causing quite a little bit of swelling), or maybe because it was in a joint. Either way, there can be fluids under pressure in a spot like that.

Likely, though, from the looks of this, there will be a big round ball of the cheesy junk inside, and maybe a tiny bit of fluids (though it may just be blood).

I hope we can get an update, as I would be interested to know if I was correct, if only to know better next time.

She made it through surgery about an hour ago! Not sure if it an abscess or a fatty tumor. After lancing we decided to remove the mass completely, we cleaned the wound and sprayed with blu-kote then wrapped her all up. Any tips for post surgery recovery? Right now, I have her inside in a room with lights turned off so she can rest with access to food and water. Is there anything I can give her like antibiotics or something to help her recover quickly, also how often should I change bandages etc...

So happy to hear surgery was successful! Do you have any antibiotic on hand? Personally, I don’t think it would hurt. Any idea what the mass may have been? Did you take any pictures? I’m really impressed. Thank you for sharing your experience.

We have the mass and will take a closer look at it in the next day or two. Didn’t see a lot off puss when we lanced it mostly blood, but there were almost pockets in it of a dirt like substance. I will keep you guys updated!

Go check on her regularly to make sure she's not bleeding. It's usually best to wait at least 24 hours to change the dressing, but not more than 48. Change it at that point every day, until there is no longer drainage.

As for antibiotics, there is very little that a person can purchase on their own that will work against this crap. I would suggest a vet to get antibiotics. Otherwise, my best suggestion is injectable penicillin for 3 to 5 days, at minimum, and if you can get it, switch to water soluble doxycycline for another 7 days.

This seems like solid advice! We just had a girl on doxycycline, and I found it online-the exact same pills I paid a fortune for at my vet. My vet instructed 1 capsule, opened & dissolved in 1 liter water as the only source of drinking water for 14 days (make fresh each day). The instructions on the website are a little different, and I honestly don’t know which is better. 6908FE2F-3C71-4DAF-A590-1A6BE702D63D.jpeg

Thank you I work at a feed store and we sell other pills from this same company so I’m sure I can get my hands on it!
