Biting hen?

Well, I can sure relate! Acquired 4 Rhode Is. Reds, at 5 mo. old. One has bite me 2 times. I cannot pick any of them up, they are wild, they finally, after 3 weeks follow me with the older chickens. But if I cannot pick them up how can I tame them? I go out after they have roosted for while at night, and talk to and pet them, and hold them. That is when she bite me. Hard! Drew BLOOD! Tried again a few days later, and she bit at me before I could pick her up. I am become skeeert of her, and I do not scare easily. Any more hints of what to do. I do need to wear heavier clothing and gloves!

I have an 18 month old rhode island red hen too who bites while I'm weeding in the garden. I thought at first it was because she thought my hand was food or thought my hand was going after something she wanted. she's drawn blood several times and last time blood and a nice bruse.. I may have to try the water bottle thing.. while digging the garlic area this evening I tried moving her away so I could pull the grass but she was right back.. she can be a sweetie to. but man it hurts when she bites

first of all u must know the reason that why is your bird is biting you.....
the first reason that i think could be that she is doing this because she thinks you are having something to eat in your hands
secondly the reason could be that she is afraid of you
the best way to train your hen/chicks is that when ever you go close to her just slowly talk to her before entering...then just put your hand towards and stop let her feel you.. then slowly put your hand onto her and never put your hand from above because this makes her feel that an enemy like a big bird is around....
then just pet her... however she likes do the same thing several days.... the bird is yours...!!!!
