We had chickens just show up on our property last spring. We've had a few waves of chicks, and chickens are starting to take over the neighborhood. Roosters tend to rotate in and out of our property. Currently there's a very large red rooster who's taken up residence. We tend to feed and watch over the chickens that are here best we can for not really having got them in the first place. Today while feeding the chicks the rooster came to eat. When I walked by he attacked me. I have a 2 inch cut on my leg and am not sure if he got me with his beak or foot. I cleaned the wound, it's not what I would call serious. Should I be worried? I'm not sure what illnesses people may or may not catch in this situation. Needless to say I was this bugger gone. I have two small children. But they are all so wild catching them is near impossible. Animal control can't help either as they are set up for this type issue.

The rooster probably got you with his spur (claw on the back of his leg). Just treat it with peroxide and antibiotic ointment like any other scratch. He was apparently trying to guard his chicks. If you really believe he's a threat to your kids, try to find where he roosts at night. They're more docile in the dark and you might be able to pick him up and dispose of him. Another possibility might be to find someone with chickens and experience to come and remove all the chickens. Under better circumstances, the roo might be a fine addition to someone's flock.
