I will dig out some more pictures tomorrow of when they were babies, but I have a general question. Of my mixed 25 pullets I ordered, I had several that looked basically like penguins - Black with white chests. Two had little white spots on their heads. I have been reading a ton about breeds trying to figure these little penguins out. At four weeks, the two with the spots have now grown to be mostly black with a couple of (two ) white tipped wing feathers and a little barring, black legs with pink on the bottom between the toes. They have single combs. The white spot on the top has disappeared.

I am afraid that they might be black sex-link roos. What else hatches black and white with a spot on the head?

Here is a top pic of them the day they arrived to show the spots - they are on the left the top and bottom chicks. I know I can get a better identification of them with the current pictures, but this is just a general question about breed identification from day-old chick markings. I'm trying to learn.

Thanks.

Thanks I was hoping for barred rock and not just black sex-link.

What age does the barring pattern start to really show itself?

We got a mystery "rare" chick in our hatchery order this year. It had a white spot on its head, so we named it Dotty of course

. Anyway, she has turned out to be a Dominique. She is just beautiful! However she has yellow legs, not black...
