Hello,
I have one egg that hatched Sept 22nd and I’m not sure if it is a rooster or hen. It is a cross between a Black Australorp rooster and Cochin hen. Because it is a mixed breed I’m not sure what to expect it to look like. I’ll try to post pictures of mom and dad too so you can see what they look like. I thought the comb was a dead give away that it was a rooster but looking back of baby pictures of my dominant barred rock hen they look pretty similar.
The last picture is mom and the second to last picture is dad and baby together.

I'm not committing myself at this point. The comb color is unreliable in a photo, so I like to see feathering detail.

Closeups of the neck, saddle, and tail feathers convey much more information. But Im not able to see any of those details.

By age eleven or twelve weeks, a cockerel has noticeable sickle feathers shooting out of his tail feathers. Do you see any on this individual?

Welshies is correct. Even though this bird looks like a pullet it has to be a cockerel due to barring genetics. You can see the early signs of this in the narrow hackle feathers that are coming in on the side of the neck.

But genetics. And also large fowl cochin cockerels can be very late bloomers, like Brahmas and Orps.

I’m confused. The mother was a Cochin not a barred rock so what does the barring have to do with it? Are you just referring to color? It’s not a great picture but here’s one of his butt when he was standing on the water container today. He/she doesn’t have any pointy saddle feathers yet and has some slightly more pointed tail feathers coming in but nothing like his dad had at this age.

Yes, they are referring to the color. If th mother was a barred cochin the, you chick there is a cockerel.

We're talking genetics. Any barred hen crossed with a non-barred rooster will have barred cockerel offspring and non-barred pullet offspring. It doesn't have to be a plymouth rock hen-- a barred cochin hen will also produce sex linked chicks when crossed with a non-barred rooster.

Ok I just read the link in the first post. Thanks for the clarification. So pretty much it’s a sure thing he’s a he from what I’m understanding. That’s a real bummer since I don’t have space for another rooster and really really like this little one.
