Black Australorp, Hen or Roo

But if not, just wait until you get an egg or a crow, hopefully it will be an egg from Pengi

As an update... Raven started crowing a couple of days ago. I stole Pengi and separated him/her so we would know for sure (and Pengi always loves the opportunity to come into the house). Sure enough... 5am... Raven starts crowing.

JodyJo, how old is your roo?

I'm having similar questions about my Mary Ann being a Mary Andy. She's about 17 weeks old, grew faster than the other breeds and is definately the top dog in my flock of 3. She should start laying soon, but has started a kind of crow this last week. It's not a full rooster crow, but a shortened version right at dawn(kaw kaww). I've read where dominant hens will do this with no rooster around and am hoping she will start laying and knock off the wanna be crow. She does not have the tail feathers of your roo and there are no spurs. I've searched BA images online to compare male/female and she looks like a hen. This was the best pic I found for comparison.

I hope Pengi and Mary Ann(dy) turn out to be girls so they can stay in their homes!

They are both Roosters. It took Pengi a while to start crowing, but once he started he definitely didn't stop LOL. Raven has already found a new home and has many Black Australorp hens. I'm still fighting to keep Pengi although I have had an offer from a school to take him and keep him with an FFA farm. Pengi really developed fast after I posted this LOL Here's a recent picture.
