Black Australorp or Black Jersey Giant?

update (post #26) on my 4 BJGs (ordered all roos) and 2 freebies ordered from Towneline Hatchery, Mich
1 is a Hen BJG
2 are Australorp Roos
1 may be a different breed all together!!

pretty sure the remaining 2 are BJG roosters, YEAH!

any guesses of what the random could be? It looks similar to the rest, foot color is whiteish. Smaller. Fiesty for sure!
What are some other Black Breeds?

black sex link? Any brown in its neck?

no brown, yet
they just turned 5 weeks yesterday thou so his feathering may change.
still has the white bib flanked by his black feathers coming in.. goofy looking for sure lol

I will keep that breed in mind as they grow.
Thanks!

Add me to the "confused" pile.

Ordered 2 White Rocks, 3 EEs and 2 BAs from Meyer. The BAs have yellow and black legs and yellow feet, though one has more black than the other. Their beaks are also yellow. I do not remember either of my now 3 Y/O BAs having yellow legs/feet. They are exactly 4 weeks old in these pictures.

Look how yellow they are on this BA and how yellow her beak is.

This one has less yellow on her beak, legs and feet.

If they have yellow feet, they are Jersey Giants. Yellow feet indicate yellow skin. Australorps have white skin. Hatcheries do seem to think that Black Jersey Giants and Black Australorps are the same thing, though. I guess since they are both large black birds that lay brown eggs, they don't seem to realize that they aren't the same things. I bought 3 Australorps. One of them is a Jersey Giant. My Jersey is actually smaller than my Australorps, but she started laying before the Australorps. For a pullet, she lays very large eggs at least 5 times a week.

I got an order of all Black Australorps, they are 11 weeks now and I just noticed at least 2 of the 17 have yellow bottomed feet... So yeah I had a hatchery mix up of BA and BJGs in same shipment with NO BJGs ordered...

I can understand at a feed store where, like hardware and clothing stores, people pick something up and change their mind put it down wherever. "Look here are some black chicks, I'll put them in there"

I would have guessed hatcheries would have a better system to keep the breeds separate. Given JGs are a lot bigger, eat a lot more and don't lay nearly as well as BAs, I'm not real excited about my yellow footed "BA"s.

I got them from my local feed store that sources from Ideal Poultry. It's a small, locally owned and operated store that is very good about keeping everything properly labeled. The only black chicks they had at the time were "Australorps."
