Black Australorps for me?

I am a fan of them. Still have one hen that is 5 years old. She still kicks out an egg a couple times a week for me. I have an Australorp rooster as well. IMO, I will always have black Australorps in the mix. Beautiful bird with hues of green in the feathers.

A black Australorp holds the record for laying 365 eggs in a year. Yep an egg a day for a year

Hi all,

I live in the north east and have long cold winters. (6 months or so.) It is said that Black Australorps are cold AND heat hardy. They are also pretty quiet and lay good sized eggs that suit me well. Are they the breed for me? I really like them and would love to have two or three of them.

Thanks :love
I like them too!! I don't have any now but am considering getting some:)

A lot of people really like the BA's.

My experience with them is a bit more negative. I raised 3 from hatchery chicks. One broke her neck flying into a wall. One was constantly broody. And the other was a real bully to every other bird in the flock, she was a holy terror.

I don't think I'll have them again. But every bird is different...breed characteristics are generalizations.

Is there any truth to the notion that black chickens are less vulnerable to foxes and other land predators? If it's true, then that and the fact that they are cold-hearty makes them a good bird to have in my part of the world.
Interesting legojenn about the predators statement...I would like to know if that is true I am trying to decide which type of chickens to get black Australorps, Welsummers, or RIR's....?:idunno
