Black Australorps- Genders?

#7 is one of the ones I was thinking is a roo....

I am thinking mine is a roo too....I posted pics of her/him yesterday and the consensus of replies were mixed.....I can hope though

I've got what I'm hoping is the girl I was supposedly sold, and she looks just like #2, 7 is looking a bit rooish and it's hard to tell but if that comb is reddening like it looks, that's prob roo too, and maybe 11. Can't see all the tail feathers but my girl has long tail feathers which started making me think roo but apparently that's part of the pullet trait so...fingers crossed.

This seems as good a "what gender is my BA" to continue as any. Mine are from Ideal and were hatched 6/12/2012. The are looking a fair bit different with respect to total feathering and tail feather length specifically and I am worried that might mean one is a roo. At first I thought if that was the case it would be the one with the shorter tail since I'd read that males in some breeds develop more slowly. Plus that one is feistier getting ALL the earwigs I hand feed the 12 chicks (6 breeds). Just pushes right past the others for each earwig presented. Then I saw a picture here of a BA at the same age that looked VERY similar and people figured it was a pullet. So then I'm worried if one is a roo, it is the one with the longer tail. It has a bit more comb showing but no color. I don't know when all that happens in BAs (or any other chick for that matter). Any guesses (and WHY)?

Oh, and I apologize for being OCD about this. First time chicken owner here and we REALLY don't want any roos. My daughter won't eat any egg that MIGHT be fertile and you can imagine that the non vegetarians in the family can't eat any chicken she knows personally- and neither can anyone else.

2,4,5,7 roos? I have some that are 8 weeks old and either BAs or JGs. Neither of them had pink or red combs at that age and still have barely any comb and it they still aren't red or pink . I am pretty sure they are both pullets so far. I will post you pictures so you can compare.

You are not being OCD . We are going through the same thing. I was told my one baby "Big Bird" was a roo and had a gut feeling it was but wasn't sure. This morning he crowed!!!!! Now hopefully he is the only one or our laying hen flock will be very small! We are down to 5 "hens" and 1 roo.

Woot! Australorp sexing thread. Can I join?
All three are 3.5 weeks. Chick #1 (below) I'm thinking is a pullet.

Chick #2 I'm pretty sure is a cockerel--comb, wattles, short tail at this age, and also the neck and back plumage are pointier and shinier than the other two.

Chick #3 (below) is my question mark. Long tail, and neck and back feathers say pullet. Comb and wattles are equivocal--not as pronounced as chick #2. Large size and massive legs suggest cockerel. Your thoughts?

WOW. If the comb and wattles on the second one are indicative of a BA roo at 3 1/2 weeks, I'm golden. Not even a hint of wattles on either of my BAs, the comb is barely there and very pale yellowish. My 'long tail' BA is the one with the more obvious comb. My daughter has named that one Persephone. The other is Echo.

Apparently I'm supposed to remember my Greek Mythology from like FORTY YEARS AGO! Eventually I will be able to remember the names of my chickens. I told her to take pictures, post them on the coop and put the names under each

. I know the reddish Ameraucana (or EE) is Andromeda and the other is .... um, I don't remember. I think I've got Laura and Dee figured out, they are Partridge Chanteclers. Partridge is the last name of the women they are named after. Laura (the person) has red hair and Laura (the chick) is a bit reddish. That means the other one is Dee.

I found an earwig nest last night, probably 15 in the container. Echo got all but 3 even though I was offering them one at a time to other chicks. Once Echo knows I have earwigs, she is brazen.

All the other chicks are "hmm, do I get close enough to take it?" Boom, too late, Echo already swallowed it.
