Black Copper Maran - Hen or Roo?

I just got my first French Copper Marran Cockeral. Hatched March 1 2012, he looks like the hen right now at 6 months old with copper on his head. How long does it take for the copper to go along the back? He looks like he has red highlights waiting to come in.
