Black Copper Marans discussion thread

The birds came from a good breeder but what happened is I ordered them and they were shipped and didn't make it to me for 7 days I think the post office lost the package then found it and got it to may post office and called me to come get the package. I refused to take the box that stunk like crazy. I did call the hatchery on the 4th day when it didn't arrive and they sent me a new order on the next Monday but I am thinking the person on the phone or the guy boxing the chicks just saw the word Black and sent BCM not broilers. I plan on keeping them so I can have chocolate eggs but I wont bread them forward I will butcher them in a couple years. The crazy thing is I ordered some BCM from Bev's marans blood line only 3 weeks ago so I will end up with lots of marans in a couple weeks.

wow!

how does this *girl???* look!? 5 weeks old

Can you get a side view of your chick, and hopefully a face closeup from a side view?

Initially this chick looked female to me, however... the wattles are looking pretty advanced from this angle, so having additional photos will help. Also, I may be seeing a thin, baby fuzz area down the back in this photo. Iin some lines, when saddle feathers are getting ready to grow in, the back has a baldish back strip, and pointed saddle feathers start growing in at this age. In other lines, the bird will completely feather in first, and then grow saddle feathers that push through the feathering.

If it is a male, hopefully you can keep it. Some of these males can be the sweetest and friendliest fellows, ever.

here it is up close. i'll have to get some pics of her backside in a little bit. if its a roo i'll have to sell him :( i live in the city where we can't have roosters :( it would be awesome though because I have a cream legbar and that would make a great olive egger (i think)

Quote: Wow, she is really beautiful! I'm finding I'm more partial to black chickens now than any other color. I was going to breed Wheatens, but now i'm reconsidering since the black coppers are so much prettier!

There are no roundish copper spots on the front of the neck, right? Otherwise believe this may be a pullet at this time.

Here's a cockerel that was around her age. (Reddishness or brownness in feathers was from reflected ambient lighting.)

Notice in front of the tail, very short feathers coming in? A few of the feathers have tiny, spiky points- that's what you are looking for in young cockerels. Notice anything like this in front of her tail? Of course, there's usually a larger, redder comb, and often, larger, redder wattles.
