Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Hello! New to chickens here. My daughter brought home a FBCM from a school hatching projects. I'm pretty certain its a roo. It's 2 weeks old, had been fiesty from the beginning, jumped up to nip me today, loudly protests when I try to hold it though it's been help multiple times a day since hatching. Can anyone here confirm my suspicions? Does anyone have a friendly FBCM roo? I'm wondering if there's any hope for it to be friendly in the future. All of our hens are super sweet and with two yr old twin human kids running around, I can't have a mean roo attacking. This chick is also a lot heavier than all my other chicks though none of the others are BCM so I'm not sure if that's just a breed thing.

Good temperament is definitely something that can be breed into a line. I have two older Black Copper Marans males that are sweet as can be. I can just go over to them and pick them, they are very mellow. I have a different line of Marans where the males are more aggressive. There is a limit that I will put up with. If they start jumping at me and won't learn that I'm boss, they are butchered. On a young chick? I would probably give him more time. Sometimes they are just fearful. Maybe someone else can chime in, if they have noticed a particular chick that is aggressive, does it just keep getting worse?

Same age but I'm guessing she's a blue orp and I know Orps are often know for their great dispositions. This FBCM cocks it's head and watches me intently every time I'm in the room. He snaps at me when I put my hand in but them is right next to it, looking at it and pecking at it as the little blue one jumps on. Pick him up and he's screaming at me though he sits there nicely for the most part as long as I don't try to pet him. It's fun watching all the personalities for sure. No other is quite like him. I'll give him some more time. Thanks again! And have you noticed roo chicks being heavier? Does its comb look rooish so far? Looks more developed than my other chicks but being my only BCM it's hard to compare.

To me the chick looks like a male. It is hard to tell on the comb, it is so small and young, but if you ever think about using him for breeding, make sure he doesn't have a carnation comb. The back of his comb looks kind of like that, but again, it is really hard to tell from the photo. The Marans do grow fast and the males will get bigger faster. Being from a school hatching project, you never know if you are getting pure breeds or mixes.

Does the little chick have feathers on the outside of his legs?

I am not so sure I would be too quick to say he is going to be nasty just because he pecks at your fingers. I would do like you are doing and pick him up a lot... several times a day ... and hold him periodically.

Does anybody have any pictures of a black copper Marans cockerel at 10 weeks?

My FCBM have just started laying in the last couple months One thing that I have noticed is that when I crack open the eggs there are always lots of spots in the white and close to the yolk. Is this normal for this breed? I haven't experienced this with any of the other breed that I have.
