Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Yes, she is a little on the small side. I kept her sister Chloe who has more heft, feathered shanks, better hackle color and correct eyes, but her egg color lacks compared to Kelso's. Getting some nice sized kids now...ask Mel..he's blown away by the chicks' size that he is growing out, also at how fast they are growing. He reports good growth rate, so keeping feathers crossed.

Well, I found on the Australian Marans site, some pictures, with the same quotes as the French site. Showing what they are talking about. If you scroll down there are 2 picture, one of a roo with too much copper in the breast, and next to it are 2 roos with hackles fading to straw color.

Interesting because near that, are some photos of Wheaten roos, and apparently its ok for their hackles to fade out?

Sue, I'd noticed that on the Australian site quite a long time ago - I recall wondering about it, but promptly forgot about it! I'm going to have a look, very interesting! Thanks for posting that.

Where is the best place to buy leg bands? I am hatching my first BCM eggs and wanted to be able to separate each hatch.
Thanks so much for your help.

Its the first time I've been to that site, I was wondering about birchen & some how was taken there...they have good pictures.

Is my little cockerel that bad? These are my first chickens ever so it would be ok if y'all said that we were taken. I know everybody has white primaries but none of the parent flock had any white. The breeder said it was a marker of Wade line birds and that they'll grow out of it. Is this rubbish?

I'm really doubting my chicken choosing abilities.

Looks like a pullet to me. Not bad, who said they were? I wouldn't worry about the white feathers until after their first molt. If they are still there, then worry.

I bought spiral leg bands for chicks at Cutler's poultry supply but ended up liking zip ties better. I got a bag of assorted colors in a small size at Tractor Supply & others of many colors at Home Depot. Of course you have to change them as the chicks grow but you have to do that with leg bands too.
