I managed to get some better pictures of my new guy today. The ones i posted the other day were rather lousy. He's been named Tucker.

Well I tried to get a couple pics of another roo today.

I am wondering about the color on this one. I think it is really nice to look at but not sure if it is okay, he is very dark red as opposed to a copper color. I will post pics of him from each side and one of him next to another roo to show the contrast between their two colors.

I just can not see any Shafting on this Male. Could we get a straight on shot from the front to be sure.

Well Mr. C.H. what about white on the legs or feet? I have had some birds with white on one wing primaries wing tips on two or three feathers. I have had a hard time finding and breeding perfect birds. There has to be a starting place and breed up.

So crossing them to my roosters that have a little too much copper would be good? Weird, cause they all came from the same lady. I thought maybe the girls would get their copper in when they got older.. this boy would work ok with them though, right?

Overall I'm super excited. I didn't expect to get this lucky with my first birds. Can't wait until my hens start laying!

Shafting is the streak that runs down the center of the breast feather (the stem or center of feather is called the shaft) .
To me it appears to be only a few(very visible) on this side of the breast of this rooster .

The colored feathers are not referred to as shafting but rather copper , gold (being partial color blind it looks to me like like a rich lighter brown) which it is said to be good for increasing the gold in his female daughter's necks and heads .

but this is just my opinions , which are subject to being right or wrong on any given day or time ....... (considering what little i got left) .

First of all.... thank you for all those that spend their time educating people like me. I do understand sharing the passion and the frustration that sometimes comes with it when you think people aren't listening.... but we are. (I used to raise dogs) Yesterday I was feeding the chickens some scraps. I looked down at one of the roosters and saw a side sprig. He was loaded and on the truck this morning at 0630 and delivered to a neighbor that takes my roosters.
A couple of days ago I didn't know what a side sprig was.

Can anyone please make comments on this Roo, about 5mo old. Tails just coming back in. I've got him with my mixed flock but have 8 cockerel and 7 pullets that are only about 2 months old. Should I keep him or take 1 or 2 from the young ones when they mature. Was hoping he would be fine, that way I won't be breeding sister to brother.

What is shafting?

Shafting is when the quill of the feather is a lighter color than the rest of the feather. On a BCM cockerel this could show as a copper colored line down the center of the black breast feathers. It is a color defect that you don't want on any of your birds.
