Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I have a BCM hen that just started laying. This is about the 5th egg that she has layed. Should I cull her! If I breed her with a cockerel from a dark egg line will it improve color in future generations?

That egg is like our Cuckoo Marans egg and was a disappointment to us also. We re-homed our Cuckoo and our friend re-homed their BCMs because we found them too aggressive in our layer flock. Otherwise I might've kept our Cuckoo if she wasn't so "cuckoo"!!!! If you want dark eggs I wouldn't keep your girl for breeding unless you have a limited stock to breed from. #4 is still a pretty egg but I've seen Sexlinks lay the same color. Welsummers lay pretty terra cotta eggs in all sorts of speckled patterns. That was one thing that was interesting about our Cuckoo's eggs -- sometimes they were all brown, half-brown-half darker brown, large dark speckles, small spotty speckles, no speckles -- she layed something different every time!

Thank you for your input! I have three BCM hens and I will have to go out after dark and get a little personal to find out who is laying! Darn they are very nice hens! The gal I got them from breeds sop and other then two of them being a little light on copper. They would have been good breeders.I did get eggs from another gal. I hatched 12 chicks that are 31/2 weeks old and 8 more that are 4 days old. They are from much darker eggs!

I also have a BCM pullet that just started to lay. Her egg is so disappointingly light :( she hatched out of a stunning dark egg so I expected so much more from her. Especially with the cost of the eggs I bought.

I feel your pain! I have started over three times now! I think with my new babies in about 6 more months I will be good! Its hard to spend all the money and time to start all over and over and over!

I wish you all the luck in the world. My Mocha didn't grow out right. She's all black and has a carnation comb. I was at least hoping for a dark egg like she hatched out of. Unfortunately, I'm most likely going to rehome her.

Thank you! This is a hard breed to get a good start! I do not need perfect. I would be happy with not a freek that lays dark eggs! Something I could work with! My one rooster was born with a crooked neck. He was all crunched up!

I would give her a chance (especially if you have a dark line rooster). #4 is a good start. it is darker that any sex link. starting over might be very risky.
