Black Copper Marans discussion thread

It's a boy! #2 is officially Beauregard. He sprouted saddle feathers!

Now DH and I have to decide if we're getting more Marans or EEs!

I sure hope I didn't run everybody off, it's awfully quiet...

I took some pictures of my favorite roo and would like some input.

I know his comb is frostbit and his tail is long. The wind was really blowing out there today so his tail isn't that high. It is higher than I would like but I will work with it.

Other than those issues I would like to hear more of the good or bad.

I finally made it through the 123 pages and have some questions for you. But this guy first, then some of the babies (the good, the bad and the plain ugly)

I took some head shots so you can view his head, eyes, ear coverts, comb and beak (learned a bunch on this thread reading the last few days)

Then some back shots for length and width. Last a foot shot. Is this color acceptable or too light? Oh and I am not sure I understand the "flaming" issue so I stuck a picture of his hackles to see if that is flaming or not.

The miscellaneous hens are on my bad list for not playing well with others and needed to be seperated for a bit. This boy doesn't let them get away with it. And please excuse any poop mess. I tweaked my trapizius a few weeks ago and can't do much of anything yet.

Thanks everyone!

Well, I guess I can talk to myself

Babies that have hatched out over the last week or so. There are two in the incubator hatching and about 40 more incubating.

I tried a few different areas to try and get accurate color but some are still a little off. There is one chick with a nice brown spot on it's head (?)

I don't know much but I just love his color on my monitor.....maybe his comb has a thumb print it's hard to tell how wide his head is and he looks like he narrows down too much at the tail which makes his tail look even longer but I think he might like it at my house..I still think he's nice. His shank color is correct and his leg feathering is okay. How old is he and how much does he weigh?

Rusty... I am in LOVE... that red band rooster is soooo squeezable.. just love that fat little baby rooster and the black little pullet... OMGosh.. soooo sweet... (can you say lowrider)

I love your big rooster.. the only issue that would grab me... is the tail... The coloring is great.. it does mute a little but most of em do.. He is a really nicely balanced fellow...

I am not sure what flaming is but ???? I know that flames are in the chest... I am not familiar with the "flaming" in the hackle feather...

He is shockingly beautiful to look at... I can see why you love him!! thanks for the pictures...So nice to see you...!!!!!!!

Thank you Lotsa and Geebs. You know, I am not sure what he weighs but he isn't all fluff that's for sure. Without getting on the scale my guess is about 10-11 pounds. I will have to find out.

I would like to put a different tail on him but he said no. He is a friendly boy and I hope he can perform for his ladies. I have some of his eggs incubating but they need another week to know for sure.

Geebs, what does "mute" mean? What parts are doing that? I have never heard that before.

I am relieved to hear his shanks are ok. I am way behind on what the approved is. It kept changing.

So... red band is a Mr. Ack.... oh well. They are cute. Wait until I take pics of the ones that are about 2-6 weeks. There are some mossies to out do alot of mossies. Everytime I look in there my eyes bug out. And then there are some nice ones.

It is a real learning experience to do these test hatches. Amazing differences. I will grow out a bunch and get rid of a bunch but I want to keep some of the mossies just to see what happens at maturity and egg color.

I am sure that in these 123 or so pages it mentioned the hackle flaming.... something about black and then the tips lightening up...?

It does dilute a little as it travels down the neck... Nothing to jump out at you...most of em do... and as for the tail.. Use a correct hen.. No worries.. if he is your sweet boy... well that is that then isn't it!!!?

He is just nice to look at... I wouldn't have it any other way!!! If he is the main man because of all his good qualities.. then let no one mess with that Rusty!!!!

You are wonderful. Thank you. Ah the most sweet sound of a newly hatched chick! I have a new little mottled java. Yikes, I thought it was a sussex egg lol!

I hope that other Maran can get out, it zipped pretty low and it is in a carton. I will know in the morning.

This has been a wonderful thread, thank you geebs for making it and everyone who contributes. Geebs, I don't know how you know the roos from the pullets but I want some of it to rub off on me.

I am sorry to hear about the totaled car, is the DH doing ok?
