Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Sunny and 80s here.
I knew for sure at 2 weeks that 2 of them were cockerels, the other two snuck up on me at around 4-6 weeks. There combs brightened up much earlier, and got much thicker. The wattles were also much more prominent than the pullets by then

Are we talking two weeks that you had them? I have had mine two weeks. I think that all but one was close to a week old when I got them. That one is different then the rest at two weeks old the feather growth is very slow like a roo but small in body size, comb and feet. If they have slow feather growth are they always boys?

Hey All, I can not ad anything to your posts as I never try and sex the chicks until I put them in separate grow out pens outside. I keep them until they are old enough to put the males in the freezer.

I am getting a lot of pure Black young Marans from the Eggs we bought from the man in Texas. We put the old hens with a male son that is half our breeding. We will post better pictures soon. Raining and cold here today.

Good morning Don, I hope I have some pullets out of 6 Blue Copper and 9 Black Copper chicks. I guess I have the one nice BCM hen that I can use if I end up with 15 roosters! I am not sure I want to use her. When she was younger she had some copper showing at the tips of some feathers. What do you think would you not use her? I have added a picture of what I am talking about. She is just now laying and shows none of this now. This picture isn't her but one from same batch.

If you could post pictures I could give you some fairly close guesses. Aren't yours 3-4 weeks old now? I just find it hard to believe that you have that many boys

As long as it's half roosters or less, I'm happy. I actually wouldn't have minded a couple more to choose from. I was a little disappointed when I thought there were only 2

I never have your problem! lol I always buy much more to make sure I get a couple pullets!

I agree, this one looks like he's going to be a roo.

I have mixed feelings about this one, hopefully a pullet.

This one still looks like a pullet to me. She's quite personable as well.

Thank you for all of the feedback and input. It is much appreciated! I have 15 FBCM hatching around the 12th of May, then staggered from that date, 6 self white mutant BCM and then 6 Birchen Marans. Hoping for a great hatch.
