Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Thanks for the feedback. He is the prettiest mutt roo I hatched. I had planned to cull most of them (got 25 roos).

I was only going to keep my pure breds. Sometimes though a bird is pretty and sweet and I want to keep it around.

If only I could have another couple of coops

Since all I seem to hatch are BCM roos. .. . I am becoming the collector of sweet roos too!

If only I could talk them into being so sweet as to lay eggs for me

I NEVER thought I would be a roo collector, BUT it has happened. I have a few favorite hens, BUT I have one roo that I ABSOLUTELY must hold EVERY day! He is just such a sweetie!

I invite the neighbors to see him. I hold him so the little kids can pet him!

Can someone comment on the broodiness of marans?
We only have 3 hens, all one year old this June. They have been laying well with big beautiful eggs that I have been hatching more or less successfully the past 2 months.
Now one hen is spending all her time in the nest. I think she is broody except that she is easily scared from the nest by me:) I would expect resistance and fighting from a broody. I'm ready to give her some eggs out of my bator to make her happy. What do you think? She is spending nights on the nest.

Lisa, since you are collecting roos I have several more that would be great additions to your collection. Can I send some EE boys too?

This is a good example of what we have recently been talking about using the straw colored with the darker color to neutralize the color on the end result. Thanks for posting these pictures. Don

That is why I asked to see the Dad . .. .

The offspring do have a wonderful shade of copper

Barred Rocker . ... I would LOVE to see what the hens look liked that you paired the straw roo up with to hatch such wonderful shade copper on those cockerels. . . .

I would not of thought the hen in the background would of made a good match with the straw roo. . . Did you use her or another hen?

impossible to tell. She's got the most color of the three hens. The other two have are mostly black with only slight coloring.

I've had two go broody this year and they're both less than a year old. So I'd say they're above average for broodiness.

They're His: I'm on my second broody BC this year too. I'd say yes, especially if she's sleeping in there. Though usually they're kind of in a trance.

Math: Just to pick nits - pale slate, not dark slate. Don't want to rehash the whole shank debate again.

That sussex cross is what a wheaten x bc would look like. Sussex are silver wheaten with columbian. Missing melanizers and got only one gold gene from mom. But it shows that it's possible to get a decent copper color with S/s silver/gold heterozygous + Mh/mh heterozygous Mahogany. Kind of scary.

I gotcha VC - - - would you clearlfy something for me . . . . See my box of crayons doesn't have slate in it . ..

So is pale slate close to Dark Gray ? ? ?

Or is pale slate another way of saying light Gray ? ?
