If I was selling chicks that looked like yours I would ALWAYS include a disclaimer " NOT SHOW QUALITY" marans.

My marans have issues with white feathers and I make sure that I advertise them as "NOT SHOW QUALITY", but a PERFECT bird for the backyard farmer who wants fresh eggs..... I've never had anyone walk away unhappy.

There are many folks out there that just don't care about the SOP... They don't care when they are selling or they don't care when they are buying. MOST folks have no intention of showing. They just want healthy birds, friendly birds, and eggs.

Math Ace, I think you are right on here. Only a few can be the best breeders; I for one just want to enjoy my birds and when I do breed them to keep the SOP in mind. I'm not shooting for best in show; rather beautiful eggs that customers will want in the egg carton.

Also, thanks for the SOP requirements of 8# cock and 6.5 hen.

Seabreeze--I feel like I'm back on the Maine coast--You said that your Bev Davis birds were bigger than your Jean Wade Birds. By body weight, how much different? 1 lb? 2 lb?

Chef--thanks for the correction; I've been stuffing so much info into my head it starts to feel like cotton up there!

Village CHicken--
Thanks for your detailed opinion on crossing the lines vs. staying with in a line. THe goal of a very good breeder is to identify the bad genes and then eliminate them from the flock; this can be very costly or take many generations to achieve; so these very good breeders have birds that are well worth the money.
THank you for the input on shank feathering; my cockerels are very heavily feathered compared to any pic I've seen so far. And the girls are much more lightly feathered. I breed them and see what shows up.

I do like picking up my birds, not sure they like it, a bit stand offish they are. THe feathers are remarkably soft. SO unlike my SS or RIR.

Oh I know all about that coastal heat and humidity. I was born and raised in Houma Louisiana SE of New Orleans! I'm going to Hammond in the fall to see my parents. Might be bringing her some Marans and possibly some silver duckwing araucanas if the bator and the airlines cooperate!

I see posters saying that there are BC Marans out there that are SOP acceptable, There might be female BC out there that are SOP acceptable but have yet to see a Male BC that is to the SOP without major faults.

These BC that Laniered has are from a male that has way too much color like some on the forum recommend breeding to get good colored BC. Do not breed the overcolored Males hoping to get good colored offspring as it will not happen. I test mated a overcolored male to the dark female I had and thought they looked ok, so raised over 400 young and when they feathered they looked just like these BC posted. I sold them all as Dark egg layers and wrote it off as a mistake on my part by not waiting to see what the test chicks would turn out.

No one has that super line of BC out there unless they have kept it a secret from everyone.
