Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I had moved some to a different pen and coop with a lower roost, but moved everyone back today after reading Wynette's and Don's post - will need to make some adjustments. When I build next year I will pay attention to the roost height more carefully. I try to cut and past information from various posts into a word doc I have set up on the computer. My little reference file for things like this and incubationg and the like.

All the hens are solid black with no white anywhere and I do think they mayindeed be a bit slight even though they already outsize all my adult 1 year old hens and make the Ameraucanas that are 3 weeks younger look practically puny. The Blue is not slight at all - she is a tank. I worry about them getting to big (if there is such a thing)...space and coins are my concerns in that area.
I got my birds from Greenfire (good pricing) this spring before they closed them out - When I emailed about questions on pairing them up Jenny advised to keep the Black Coppers paired, said the blue's eggs were lighter if I was thinking about using the Splash, so I assumed they are not siblings (if that was the question?).
I will probably keep both BCM roos but the Splash is really questionable...if my husband wins the day he will be outta here...need to make room for one more boy this fall.

I think they have either not started or in some cases not completed the juvie molt. No 2 roo looks a bit rougher this morning than usual since I have spent some time staring at them today, hackles and tail look 'jacked-up' a bit. Gotta go turn on the sprinkler slide for the 2 year old now before it starts baking too much. Thanks y'all.

BB13, I see after looking again that #2 has white feathers in the shank and toe feathering and they say this is a DQ. If you can catch #2 take a look at the undercolor in the Hackle as I believe it will be white, might also want to check #1 for the white undercolor also. I s there any white in wing feathers or check after the Juve molt.

This little darling is about 18 weeks old. Up until today it was chirping. This morning when I went to check on them it was attempting to crow! It was raspy sounding. "It" has been trying to do rooster things to some of the other hens. Everything about "it" screams pullet. Help Please!! I have read sometimes hens take on a dominate roll. "It" is also more of a loner and shaped a little more different the my two other marans. The other two seem like text book BCM.

Looks like a POL pullet to me. I have 5 hens that are 22 weeks old and each looks different to me in body shape, one much more so than the others. Maybe she was working on a egg song? She looks like a clean legged version, no feathered feet?

POL is Point of Lay... the point at which they lay eggies!!!

Oh sorry, POL means point of lay. Hopefully you'll get some eggs soon and have no doubts about her! I can't really tell from the picture that she has feathers on her feet, sorry.

Mine kind of look like they have feather dusters stuck to their feet, my perception must be skewed because of it!
