Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I'm not really good at this but should the combs and wattles be that big on pullets that young? My girls' were very small for such a long time. The boys developed soooooo much faster, and there is so much color on their backs and wings. They are super cute n chunky looking but I'd have to vote both look like roos to me.

Here is a newer edition to my flock, a BCM cockerel named Dr. Ruckus, I think he's about 22 weeks old. I got him from Keara and he's going to be the foundation stock for my DP flock. He's a little clean in the legs, which I kind of like (and some of my girls are a bit heavy on the leg feathers anyway).

He's good with the hens and very respectful of me, he even ignores our BR cockerel for the most part. He gives me wide berth in the coop and run, but I can corner him and pick him up if I have to, I just don't handle my roos much by choice. He's also got the sweetest soft, deep voice when he's talking to his girls, but sure crows up a storm!

He earned his place the first week we had him when he sounded the alarm and lost a few feathers fighting off a raccoon or opossum attack on our quarantine pen where he and the BCM hens where at the time.

We were lucky, my husband was walking in the door from work at 11:30 at night and came and got me when he heard some noises that sounded like restless chickens in the pen. We were standing on the deck listening when the attack started, so we went running out with a shovel and flashlight and chased whatever it was away. One hen was injured and the roo and another hen lost a few feathers, but everyone survived. They are now in the secure coop and run with the rest of the flock.

Noymira, from what I can see, I REALLY like your boy! I definitely feel that his qualities outweigh his sparse shank feathering!

So I want to know how you get them to hold still for the camera? Mine always run away and I can never get good shots.

I love how this guy turned out, I have kept 2 of his brothers (from younger hatches) and hope I see something like Dr. Ruckus when they mature! Glad to hear he is a good protector too.
