Black Copper Marans discussion thread

This is another example of what happens when someone sells these mixed Marans to people that do not know what they should look like. I think the people that sell egg from mixed breeds like this should be outed so everyone knows who they are. I see more and more of the Mixed breeds showing up on BYC with Vulture Hocks and the owner does not have a clue what they really have. We should all be honest with our fellow man when they are spending their hard earned money.

Yikes. I'm sorry to say, that boy looks half Cochin to me.

Don and I disagree on this point, though; I feel that the buyer has EQUAL if not MORE responsibility to ask questions & do their research before buying. If you're looking for a specimen that's bred to the SOP, this boy is probably as far from it as you can get - again, I'm very sorry to say that, but it is what it is. The GOOD thing is that you've come to the right place to learn, if that's what you're after! There are many folks on this thread who can give you helpful feedback and advice - just ask!

Wynette, Yes, I believe the buyer has some responsibility also. Look at the people asking how their fowl look and we can see they had no idea what a Marans should look like. I have always thought the seller had a responsibilty to explain what they were selling good or bad. If the Marans people keep selling this mixed junk you will see people paying these big prices for eating eggs getting out of the Marans. I fail to see how a new chicken person is supposed to know what questions they should be asking. Honesty is always the best policy.

Of course it is, Don, however, when you go to buy a new car, or washer, or stove...you ask questions, yes? Even if a buyer doens't know WHAT to ask, there are always standbys such as: what bloodline is this, what are you currently working on in your flock, etc.

I'm not saying sellers should hide the truth - on the contrary! I personally DO tell all when I'm selling a bird - I prefer folks to be prepared for what they'll see when juveniles reach adulthood, or what to expect from hatching eggs. Maybe I'm naive, but I believe most folks do - I think the problem is that many buyers are buying from others just like them - who haven't educated themselves, or maybe don't care - maybe just looking for very pretty eggs.

Also - "new chicken person"? I would be surprised if someone brand new to chickens would be looking to purchase Marans right off the bat. JMO.

I did it... Luckily I got some halfway decent birds to start. And I do know a little about what is good vs. bad, it's just where I am, there aren't any Marans close by. Living on Long Island has limitations, and a big one is chickens!

BEST of luck!!! Hope you have stock you are able to work with. This breed is fantastic - so worth the work!

Thank you so much, everyone, for the replies!

Well, I wasn't even /aware/ of the fact that it was possible to show chickens when I first got mine. Our sole purpose for getting them was egg production, and my Mom chose to get some BCMs because the rooster is supposed to get quite large, and we supposed that a bigger rooster would be good for protecting the flock. Someone told me he would get to be about to my mid-thigh. I honestly have NO idea if that's correct.

I do have a small interest in showing, but I also have a few show stock bantams that I can use for this purpose.

I still love my Dez, but at least I now know not to use him for breeding!

Again, thank you all for the advice <3

I bought my hatching eggs right here on a BYC auction and was told that they are Jeane/Presley lines and the breeder advised she was breeding to standard. The seller had great feedback and nice dark eggs that were very well packaged. I had no reason to believe that I would receive poor quality stock.

I agree about the integrity of the seller... Especially ppl selling birds on Ebay and Craigslist.... Breeder that breed in volume instead of careful selection are a huge problem.... Multiplyers should take care to Cull and not "dump" their birds on the public...

Don't you agree Don?

The question is here.... When you ask a person what line they started with and they refuse to answer or lie... then we are all done a dis-service... Doncha think? Integrity is key when selling/buying birds. Do your research... If you can't find history on a person or Sketchy history...move on... It doesn't pay to waste your time with ppl who "try on hats".

BA HA HA! When I saw you post in this thread, I ALMOST said something like "are you watching my count?" but decided not to. Thanks for the smile! We DO get a bit tense in this thread!

And Geebs.. Unfortunately, this is why America is in the shape it's in now. We are so desperate to make a buck, people will buy and sell the craziest things. I showed a friend of mine my first Marans egg. Her first response was...."I've seen them go for $200.00 a dozen. When are you going to start selling them?" I will eat them before I figure out how to make something that will hatch out presentable to the Marans world. But that's just me, hopefully I still have some integrity left. I would never do that.
