Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I, too, am a newbie chicken owner (story on my BYC page) drawn to BCMs. I was first facinated by the dark brown eggs, and then the beauty of the birds. My main purpose in raising chickens right now is for eggs and meat, and as I understand it, the marans are excellent for both, which is another plus. My kids are interested in possibly showing chickens in the future, so of course, I would like to find SQ stock (hatching eggs) to start with, but for that I am going to have to trust that the seller is being honest about what they are offering. Yes, I have done a lot of research on this site (oh, there's sooo much wonderful info here!) and others, but I can't go out and inspect the parent chickens to find out if the seller is telling the truth and not hiding things - I just trust that they are being truthful. Of course, as a newbie I don't really know everything I should be looking for, but I think the best way to learn is with some chickens right in front of me to look at. I don't expect that I am going to get exhibition stock out of every egg I hatch and those that aren't at least workably close will be used for the original purpose - meat and eggs. I am quite content with that. IF I am fortunate enough to hatch some chicks with good genetics, then breeding them to show and/or sell would be a plus, but I would only do so if I thought I was truly breeding to acheive the standard and be a positive to the breed. To me, that is just the common sense to breeding ANY animal.

That said, I have been in contact with a member of BYC to try to get some BCM hatchings eggs. The source lines are well known and the pictures look wonderful, but I am trusting that everything I have read is the truth. Maybe I am too trusting, but I do believe it. I am not totally sure at this point in time if it is going to pan out, though. If it does, great!, I'll see what I end up with. However, if it doesn't, do any of you experienced BCM owners have any suggestions about a trusted source to get good quality eggs?

Yeah, it was the egg color that brought me to the breed and I was lucky to have a breeder of FBCM's close by. Now I love em for their nice coloring and sweet disposition.

Me too! I was looking for dark eggs and Keara offered me a few of her birds, she's only about 45 minutes from me.

While I will not be actively breeding to SOP, since I'm breeding mine for dual purpose, I will be paying attention threads like this one and looking out for any major defects in my birds. I also have no plans on selling hatching eggs or birds, although I will share birds with my back yard flock friends who want dark eggs, much like Keara did for me. Otherwise anyone who need to be culled, as well as most roos, will end up on our dinner table.

Hi guys,

Can anybody help me with my two chicks? Will they be any particular colour, or is it impossible to tell?

The father is a Copper Black Maran.

And as for the mothers, these are to the best of my knowledge as I didn't buy them:

The mother of the black chick is a standard ginger hybrid, so whatever the usual cross is I suppose.

The mother of the yellow chick is a a copper black maran, or hybrid.

Here's a picture of all three so you can see:

At last, something we agree on. Someone who has gone to the trouble of doing some homework before jumping in is hard to cheat.

NYREDS, where would you suggest new Marans people get the info. to keep from getting taken to the cleaners. I have yet to find anywhere that I could trust to give me the info. I would need before buying. When I started out I spent several thousand dollars on eggs that should of been eating eggs. Thr problem is there is just not that many dedicated Marans breeders that are selling eggs and adult fowl. The reason for this is that there is more buyers than there are sellers.

We should look at how many breeders were selling eggs for up to 150 a dozen two year ago and have now vanished. This is not just Marans either.

The Marans club website has a lot of info including the Standard description of the breed. Marans are "hot" right now & apparently demand exceeds supply. This will change as more people begin to breed them & the novelty wears off. As with many other hobbies there are always fads in the poultry fancy. Marans are hot among a certain element of the fancy but something will come along to take their place.
As to where to go to talk to people about Marans or any other breed you can't beat a chicken show. In my experience poultry people are only too happy to talk about their birds & with rare exception most are willing to share stock to get people started. There are, of course, opportunists who are less than honorable in their dealings but I think they're in the minority. I raise show dogs as well & I assure you the poultry fancy is much less cut throat than the dog fancy.
Getting into a new breed/variety by buying hatching eggs from unknown sources is a crap shoot at best & more than likely a waste of time & money. No offence meant but spending several thousand dollars on eggs is just crazy. Especially when you know nothing about the source.

My first time judging Marans eggs was yesterday. That was pretty interesting. I think the APA should promote more of that. There seems to be a lot of interest and it is easier to ship eggs than it is to ship a bird to a show.

I have to find some gloves for judging. The problem is that I have to be able to feel the bird through them. The thing I hate most about getting old is that things that used to bounce right of my skin now open me up and I bleed like mad. Part of it is that I am also taking a blood thinner, but the skin is not nearly as thick as it was. I was also spurred by a SS Hamburg banty, but he was slow enough that I saw it coming and he didn't do much. I was not very careful taking him out after he did that. Technically I didn't have to judge him, but I hate to do that. After 30+ years of judging I have only refused to take out one bird. That was a white male Cornish LF that was remarkably fast for his giant size. He was probably the largest Cornish I have ever seen. (Lewis Strait line). There was no way I was going to wrestle with that guy.

Walt

I feel for you Walt. Band Aids have become a standard part of my judging bag along with the Standards, extra pens & my business card. Before I venture into the show hall I drop a couple of band aids in the pocket of my judging coat. Just one of the many joys of growing older.

Yum Marans roo! I had one on the dinner table last night. Kinda makes me look forward to seeing faults in my roos.... so I can have a good reason to eat them!!!
