Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I need pictures...

Barngodedss01,
From your description, it sounds like you are describing feather shafting...

Culler,
I guess that was a bad example because I didn't specify male or female with the breast coloring...

The standard defines Mossy as..
Confused, indistinct, irregular or disarranged color markings which destroy the desired color contrast or pattern...

The example the give is "Black speck on the surface of parti-colored birds where white is desired.

So my definition of a color where it doesn't belong is still appropriate. ...

Mealy is defined as buff or red plumage flecked with a lighter color, as dusted with flour or meal.

So what is the difference between those two terms? Is it just the amount of inappropriate color OR is it that mealy is when a lighter color occurs and mossiness is when a darker color appears inappropriately?

Culler, yes, sir. I completely agree with buying from reputable breeders. I'm attending the Fancy Feathers show on the 10th and plan on coming back with birds from several breeders (hopefully). I know it doesn't guarantee me great birds, but I'm hoping it will help. I'm in this for the "long-haul" :) and am hoping that by the time my kids graduate (they are about to be 10 and 6) I will have learned something :)

After two years of culling I was at a point where I had completely eliminated the white feather. I am talking about after the first full molt. Not the Juve feathers, If the white is still there after the juve molt they never eat anymore of my high priced feed.

Lisa, the feather shafting is just the quill of the feather will be lighter than normal. The mossy feather usually shows up in Laced feathers. The BC Marans are so new in the SOP that I doubt if anyone really knows how to describe the Mossy feather.

I bet Walt could clean this up especially if Barb posts a picture and someone emails Walt.

I would recommand that you copy the standard of the colors you are interested in really acquiring at the show.

I had a heck of time finding these feathers when I actually went hunting for them! They only show in the brightest light. They are on her wing ...

I'll see if I can track down Walt for a comment ....

Thanks Walt, and Barn Goddess, I've been trying to understand this for months.

Don, how old are the birds at "the first full molt". Once the chicks feather in, the feathers are lost and replaced many times. So are you referring to when the birds are a year or more and at their annual molt?

Thanks for your support and interest in developing the FBCM further.

Arielle, When the young fowl are around five months old they usually go through a full molt called the Juve molt. In my fowl I would cull anything with a white wing or Tail feather or white undercolor in the Hackle. Now are some others that say they leave them to much later to cull. I just do not want to have the white in my fowl period.
