Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Can I please get opinions on this roo? I might be picking up eggs from a guy with him.

Hi. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this looks like a hen or a roo. I bought 2 Marans as 4 month old pullets but I'm thinking this may be a roo. I'm a new chicken owner and simply have them for eggs and fun. But I can't have roos where I live.

Also, here's a link to a video of my (hopefully all) hens.

Thanks!

definitely roo! pullets won't have that colour along their back...

I love his hackle color(as we need some help in that department), I'm not crazy about the tail, I'd like to see it a little shorter. From this picture, you can not see his chest so you can't tell if it's got color (you want it to be solid black). I can't see his eye color, back length or comb very clearly, but they look ok from what I do see. Can you tell if his foot feathering is on the outside toe and shanks only? My old eyes are seeing lots of feathering perhaps where it's not needed or wanted (middle toe).

Are you getting the eggs shipped? Or are you able to visit the farm? Can you ask the seller for a picture of his ladies or a picture of the eggs? I am by FAR not the most experienced eye here, but overall I think he's pretty nice. Not a bad starting place.

Penny only has copper on her neck and just got it recently copper has copper on his wings and neck and got it like two weeks ago

Chad, several breeders breed for very dark eggs. That said, even the darkest layer sometimes has offspring that do not lay as dark as the momma. We cross our fingers and hope for the best. Here are a couple pics of some of the nicer eggs my hens have laid - I know other folks have hens who lay eggs much darker, though:
