Black Copper Marans discussion thread

It is difficult to get good photos of chickens, however good photos showing front, side, shot from above to show width of back, sometimes close up of head/comb, are all necessary for people to help evaluate birds via photos. Pics of the bird in a relaxed state, not too hot or cold, on a level surface are ideal. This is not the easiest thing to do, I know.

Very odd that I just now found this thread before begin a search! Want to share a pic for comments. Want to also post a pic of his mother and sister later today. Sorry I could not get a better leg shot.

I see the same things DM sees, light halo on the hackles and really low wing..... but he seems really small..... age would help. I do like his tail set though. Looks like his legs are really light and he looks narrow at the rear.

Question:

Lincoln is 11 weeks old. You can see in this picture the whisps of white on the back of his head and neck and a white feather peaking out from under his wings. And he has a couple white wing feathers. Will this change as he gets older, or is he just going to have white on him? Would I be right to think white is not a good thing on a BCM?

If he has white feathers after the next molt that is not a good thing. The purple sheen is not good either.

He looks like a bantam in comparison to the hand vs. his development (triangular shape, sickles, color, etc.) Are you sure this is a BCM? Look forward to more pics.

I will take some pics in a few minutes of mother and daughter. The above almost rooster, is named "big baby boy". When he was a chick and growing, he was picked on would often run to the front of the pen and want to be held, he thrived on it!
My hand is in there on purpose, for size comparison. Yes, he is a bantam, as is his mother, a BCM, bantam. He is Langshan over BCM, both bantams, and I appreciate you noting the difference! He is a pet, not breeding stock, his crossing was by accident, not on purpose. He has his own pen and his mother roosts on top of his pen at night. He is an excellent bird for showmanship, as he is gentle as a lamb, and still likes to be held.

This male appears to be a Bantam male, looks to have white in tail and possibility of yellow feet.

oh my ... you guys can see a lot better than i can ......... even with my reading glasses i still don't see any yellow and the white that i was thinking of as glare ............

I have a mystery. This is a chick hatched 12/19/13. Either it came from the BCM pen or *someone* mistakenly put it in the wrong coat pocket and it's from the blue copper pen. From the day-old photo I'm told this is a wheaten outcrop chick.

Here is the same chick today, 4.5 weeks old. Pure snow white (except that little bit of BluKote on the shoulder). What gives? If this were a recessive white I'd be getting more of these chicks (25% statistical average, yes?). I'm SO confused.
