Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Did she say dark eggs? Stands to reason since this is the Marans thread, but I hadn't thought to ask for clarification. Maybe...

Or..............(production red egg)

Or................

(Sorry.....I love speckly eggs!)

One of my young BCM, these were her first 4 eggs. If you enlarge, the photo you can really see the speckles on the first 3. I love speckled eggs too!!!

Pretty eggs, Zanna - yup, you can see the speckles! Lovely.
Thank you! I thought they were going to go away and of course wishing her whole egg turned the colour of the speckles. Doesn't look like that is going to happen, they are staying speckled. Just got to get DH through his 2nd full knee replacement surgery next week (first one was in Sept.) then she goes into the breeding pen! I want more of her and her eggs :)

Oh goodness - hope all goes well with the knee replacement. My DH just went through an athroscopy for a torn meniscus, and the surgeon said we would be looking at a full knee replacement in 8-10 years. I'm not looking forward to that...geeze, I guess he's probably not, either, though!

I have a question about hen maturity. I have what I bought as a BCM pullet (it IS a pullet) but she's getting to the 18ish week mark and she still don't have much in the way of a comb. It's been pretty flat and blackish/greyish until around 2 weeks ago, and it's pinking up now, and it is also getting some small ridges, but nothing like I would expect to see in a single-combed bird, or have seen in the rest of my flock. Do these ladies get their comb a bit later, or do I have a probable mutt on my hands?

They can be a little late to the comb party. I have a BCM pullet who was born at the end of June who just started to develop a comb about a week ago. Her and her sibling do not appear to be terribly interested in laying eggs in the near future. However, it is worth the wait.
