Black Copper Marans discussion thread

I love this forum! I also have a question :) I don't know if it's already been asked or answered before, but can anyone tell the differences between Bev Davis, Littlepeddler, Wade Jeane and other "top" lines of BCMs? Like any difference in the egg color or feathers? I know not every hen or rooster will come out the same but just wanted to get some people's opinions to help me decide which would be a good choice to go with :) I would really like to get BCMs that lay the darkest eggs and are bred towards french standard. I apologize if this question has been asked before. I'm new hear and have read a lot of posts/threads but couldn't find an answer

Well I am now a happy BCM owner ;-) I have something I'm wondering about tho. I have 6 chicks, probably about 10 or 12 days old now. Five of them have varying numbers of white feathers in their wings, all just the leading edge feathers. But one chick has NO actual white feathers. There is a little bit of white fluff along the leading edge of the wing, but all the actual feathers are black.

I am wondering what this will mean for this bird as it grows out. Will it more likely be too dark when it grows up? I have tagged it so I can keep track of it.

It seems that a couple of white wing feathers is normal in chicks and juvies so to find one with perfectly black wings seemed strange.

Yes, it is normal for the chicks to have white until after ther 4-5 month molt. Some do not show the white in wing but should have some around the head and chest.

Yes, this one has white chest and a bit around the head. I just wondered since it didn't have white in the wing if it was going to end up being too dark or if this might be a great start to a line of birds that didn't have white feathers even as juvies.

finally got eggs yesterday

, its been almost 2 months! Six..... DH eat most of them this morning but will get photos of the next group. Now to pull the incubator out of storage. Where is the best place to buy an egg color chart, 'cuz it is past time for me to own one?

You can order them straight from the maran club, at http://maransofamericaclub.com/moaclogo.php

I ordered the large 8 1/2 x 11 sheet egg color chart. The link for the mini chart is broken, tries to order a travel cup, I e-mailed them about it and they claimed they would look at it but that they thought it was right, but I see today it is still wrong. Unless there is another way to select it that I wasn't seeing.

I cant even force mine to turn off..

Oh another Seb lover... how nice.

Still haven't culled this big cockerel here. I hate to see a big bird go. And its cold outside (and there are wolves after me) so I don't feel like plucking out tin the cold.
The incubator is supposed to come for the holiday but first I need a few EGGS. My girls should be old enough. Are Marans known for developing a bit later? I know Ameraucanas do and the weather might be a factor. With three pullets here you would think someone was going to lay. One of the girls has been seen squatting for the cockerel so... where are the eggs??
