Quick genetics question.....

I gave some cull BCM roosters to a coworker who is raising barred rock hens for eggs. He wants to hatch his own barnyard mutts so he does not need to buy chicks every few years. Would a Black cooper roo over Barred Rock hens make a sexlinked chick?

So I am new member today! I've read and browsed for over a year now since getting my first small flock of 6.
I expanded this year to the BCMs and my very first roo! However, his comb is getting all "wavy" at approx 6 wks now.
Will this straighten out? Is it lack of nutrition? I read for so long about the breed but don't anticipate showing; just love of chickens and grown to desire the breed...so any thoughts? Opinions?

Comb growth differs a lot between lines. I think sometimes when comb development outstrips the growth of the head and skull you get a slight wave that does go away when the head catches up. But I have only seen this in my cuckoos. Some of them have a really bad twist at initial development - part of the comb seems "stuck" down inside while the rest grows like gangbusters all around it. Then it just pops out and everything eventually straightens out nicely. I wouldn't have believed this if I hadn't seen it myself.

Yes I believe you are right. I lifted out the charts for later. Still, not everything in the charts but a lot in the thread. Of course I would go and get males where I needed females... oh well.

OH MY WORD. I think I culled several cockerels years ago for this, thinking it was a comb defect. It was the point furthest back, and it looked like a small bump, but the surrounding "tissue" around it sort of made it look like a donut, except the middle portion was a bump rather than an indent. Then, the forward part of the comb seemed fine. Does that sound like what you are describing here?

I have to agree with this. I have noticed this on some of my blue copper male babies. Some of them start out with a little twist then straighten themselves out.

I have a pullet with a slight wiggle in her comb..... figured it was permanent... she is 20 weeks today....

I noticed it when she was little... kinda hard to see from the pictures... but now it does seem to have straightened up pretty good. Just a little wiggle in it....

I read on one of the marans threads that a wiggle was ok in a laying hen--I realize you are picturing a pullet . . . just saying perhaps we cull too fast for some defects. I guess it'a bout know how these creatures develop.
