Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Lost my backup BCM rooster to a fox today .....****...... I guess I will have to hatch some eggs! Neighbor has a broody hen in her heifer barn that should do the trick. I also think it is also time to make sure the incubator is still working. No paired breeding set up yet, I kept two BCM roos and one Blue copper so this will be a mixed bag. But I worry now I am down to two roosters!

Here are the eggs I will give my neighbors broody! Some really nice round ones, hard to tell which is the pointy end.

haahaa . . that has been my struggle wlth BCM eggs too!! ANd of course candling doesn't reveal anything helpful. I tried a method someone else suggested: roll on a flat surface. I roll each three times to be sure.

Hi, the darkest red ones are being laid by one of my younger black marans girls. I am loving that color of egg and hope I can get a whole flock of black marans laying the black cherry eggs (as dh calls them lol)..

I have some bayhorsebonnie (Donna Gherke (sp)) bcms that lay a brown red (but lighter than the black marans) very large egg. I pretty much have closed that flock because they have so many problems and only let them hatch out a few chicks per yr to keep the eggs going. It throws BTB and other oddities so I am not using or really working with that flock right now. I like their eggs for eating though lol.

As far as BCM, I am mainly working with a flock of very dark laying bcms but there is no red in those eggs at all.
Regardless of variety, Beautiful Eggs ! Would love to be able to gather up those when collecting. Interesting how the different strains have their own variety of colors.

Definitely keep my interest . Keep up the good work. Love the dark layers of all sorts.

Your eggs are gorgeous!! I am hoping to add this breed to my flock soon!

I am not sure where Williford is, but we are in the Northeastern part of Texas. We are not shipping chicks right now due to the cold temperatures and staying busy traveling to shows. We will start hatching and shiping when the show season is over and the temperatures get back up. If you don't find something closer to you, let me know. We hatch on Sunday night and Monday so we can ship out on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Good Luck,

Keara are you selling any of those? I'm looking for a few dark eggs from different lines as mine. I have a nice splash copper too and want some more black copper girls for him. I have a blue and his two hens too and one plain black hen (supposed to be a copper, but don't see any. But her eggs are very dark and she crosses well with the splash) Thanks!! I'd trade some bbs too! I have some in for the NYD hatch and even now I have 7/8 going great. One was an early quitter.
