Black Copper Marans discussion thread

See the white at the base of his tail? Due to that, I would NOT use this male. It also appears that his shanks are yellow...if so, that's most definitely a DQ point. Sorry...using this male to breed off will only produce more birds that do not have good type.

I am very much in the learning stages as well, actually always learning but I would not use him for breeding if you want Black Copper Marans unless he came from a really dark egg and that is all you are looking for from your breeding. If you want to breed to SOP he has multiple problems. His legs are yellow, they should be the colour of your hens. Looks like white in the base of the tail, another difficult issue. Hopefully someone else will give you some more opinions, there are some really great and experienced people on here..........

Everyone has a reason to breed chickens. Here at 2XL we pay attention to egg color, but "type" and "breed character" are very important to us. We strive to breed show Marans. We show our birds and have been very competitive with Marans from our breeding program. Due to this, we do not use anything in our breeding pens that has faults or disqualifications. Even with our strict requirements to be in our breeding pen, we still get chicks that are not show quality.

I agree with other people who have commented on this picture. The male has white at the base of his tail, he does not seem to have enough copper on hit saddle, and his legs show a yellow tint. I cannot determine what his shank feathers look like, but the any one of the other three issues would keep me from using him. I think that the issues he has would all be difficult to breed out of the next generations.

Hey guys I am having a lot of trouble finding hens or started pullets for sale. I really want a few BCMs for the egg color to add to my basket. Even if they are a breeders culls, I don't care if a feather is out of place :)

Where are you located? There may be someone on this site that is in your area. If not, maybe one of us would know of someone in your area. I am interested in your location because shipping can be costly. We have spent way more money on shipping than the cost of the bird in some cases.
