Black Copper Marans discussion thread

Hey all.

I'm just curious (not planning to breed or show). I picked up this boy at a swap meet. He was the homeliest little chick and was stuck in the 'ugly/gangly' stage for the longest time. I was snapping some pictures this past weekend and was a little surprised to realize just how much he's changed. I guess he's always been 'my handsome boy' even when he was down right ugly - so I hadn't really noticed just how handsome he's gotten until I was loading the picts on the computer.
So - how does he measure up as a BCM?
Thanks,
Debbie
Awe...I just love an "ugly duckling" story!

IMHO, and I am no expert, he's not all that bad. His tail is a bit too upright for my personal liking, and it appears that he "may" be a bit light - how old is he? If he's less than a year old, he'll likely fill out more.

His shanks are a bit sparse in feathering, but it appears they do go all the way down the outside toe, as they should. Shanks appear to be good in color. He has very nice color balance. I also like his topline. Would love to see a close-up picture of his head so we can see comb detail and eyes.

Hi, With your stated purpose I can see nothing that will work against you. Would be nice to see a picture from the front. How does his ear lobe look to you, does it have White. Could use a little more feather on the legs and feet if you were going to try and breed to the SOP. Overall he looks good though.

Thank you everyone for your feedback! I really appreciate it :)

I just received my hatching eggs (FBCM) and an setting them today.

I will just keep looking for a couple hens or pullets :) I have a beautiful pair but would love a couple more hens to add In for eggs sooner than my hatching eggs will provide :)

Again thank you all

Hi there - just a quick note that in the U.S., they are called "Marans" - no "French" in their name.

(I.E., Black Copper Marans, not French Black Copper Marans.)

Best of luck on your hatch!

Since the SOP says the legs should be "lightly feathered" I don't see anything wrong with his amount of feathers.
I agree, and I may have spoken too soon when I gave my feedback; I was basing my comment on what I am seeing being shown, which is a bit heavier shank feathering. However, I personally don't believe this male would be marked down for the amount he has.

Wow. Thanks!!

I'm just tickled to hear some BYC'ers who know BCMs say nice things about him.

He's 9months old.
Yes, he does have some white on his earlobes. Just sort of spotty.
He has feather stubs all the way down to his toe nails, but the girls seem to like him 'clean shaven' and pick at his feet.
Here's one from November from the front. He's filled out and gotten wider across the back and taller since then.

I don't have any recent closeups of his head since he's usually trying to heard HIS girls away from me when I'm sitting in the run. LOL

His legs look pretty light here, but maybe it's just the flash on the camera?

all right last Nov I hatched 2 BCM from shipped eggs. Here they are now at 8 weeks, not positive if I have a pair or two boys; One I've known was a boy from early on, but not sure about the other one.

Chick one on the left, chick two on the right

Chick one today

Chick two today

And the two of the together, number one in front

The definite boy is bigger, thicker legs, bigger tail. started growing a comb at 10 days. And he is huge, just built like a tank. The other one just recently started growing a comb and wattles, is a little smaller and smaller tail.
